5 Different Types of Affiliate Marketing Revenue Sources

Affiliate marketing is a very popular revenue source online. In fact, for many, affiliate marketing is not an alternative advertising method anymore, but rather, their main source of their daily profits and income. The question is what type of affiliate marketing should you choose? Do you get the same benefits with any of them, or are there some affiliate marketing programs which are more effective than others?

Here are the basic affiliate marketing programs

1. Pay-Per-Click (PPC)
Pay-Per-Click is the most popular affiliate marketing program and it works best for affiliates with small websites. The merchant pays only when a visitor is referred to their website and clicks on an ad on the affiliate site. Some programs are Google AdSense, Chitika, Yahoo! Publisher and more. The good thing about this is the affiliate gets paid a commission even if the visitor does not buy anything from the merchant’s website. On the other hand, the commissions paid are smaller.

2. Pay-Per-Sale (PPS)
This is the most lucrative affiliate marketing program for affiliates and also the most popular one among merchants. Through PPS the merchant only pays their affiliate when the visitor referred purchases something. The commissions are significantly higher than in PPC, sometimes going up to 75% especially with informational products.

3. Pay-Per-Lead (PPL)
In this program the affiliate gets paid whenever their referral fills in an application or a similar form. Pay-Per-Lead, or, sometimes we will call it Pay-Per-Action, can be very profitable because companies are willing to pay well for leads that are highly targeted.

4. Single-tier, Two-tier and Multi-Tier
These types of affiliate marketing programs rely on different levels or tiers by which payments are made. While in singe-tier the affiliates are only paid for the direct sales or traffic generated by them, in two-tier they are also paid for the traffic or sales from the members they recommended. Similarly, in multi-tier, the affiliate marketer gets compensation for a wider number of members from their network.

5. Residual income
With residual income affiliate marketing the affiliate marketer is paid whenever the customer they referred returns to the promoted website to purchase another product. Generally residual income comes in more than once, such as a monthly or quarterly basis.
